Fabless microprocessor design company Hyperstone AG and dedicated systems house Global Digital Technologies SA have ported the uClinux kernel to Hyperstone's E1-32XS processor, adding uClibc, the elf2flt tool, GNU tools, and some essential applications to create… “hyLinux.” HyLinux is available royalty-free under the GPL for Hyperstone's E1-32XS RISC/DSP processor targeting multimedia and telecom applications.

Hyperstone says its E1-32 processors combine RISC and DSP instruction sets with on-chip microcontroller functions, and that the fast multiply unit at high clock frequency makes it one of the fastest CPUs on the market with regard to DSP functionality. It claims that the single-core architecture frees developers from integrating the controller with the DSP and the peripherals, and that development is easier than with two-core solutions, even those implemented on a single silicon die.

“Porting Linux to our single-core RISC/DSP processor opens up a whole new world of applications, interfaces and drivers. Our customers have anxiously been expecting the introduction of hyLinux,” said Dr. Matthias Steck, VP of sales and marketing at Hyperstone.
