3.5-inch SBC gets revised at the Atomic level

Feb 3, 2011 — by Jonathan Angel — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Axiomtek announced a 3.5-inch SBC that offers DDR3 memory along with Intel's Atom N455, D425, or D525 processors. The Capa801 includes CompactFlash and Mini PCI Express expansion, two RJ45 ports for gigabit Ethernet, six USB 2.0 ports, plus both VGA and LVDS video outputs, according to the company.

With a long line of "Capa" boards, Axiomtek is a stalwart supporter of the "3.5-inch" SBC format, which actually measures 5.75 x 4.1 inches. Last September, the company released the Capa800, a device that offered DDR2 memory along with Intel's Atom N450, D410, or D510 processors.

The Capa801 (above) is a new iteration offering the same form factor and capabilities, but now with DDR3 memory and newer Atoms on board: either the netbook-oriented, single-core N455, the desktop-oriented D425, or the dual-core D525. The 1.6GHz N455 has a 5.5 Watt TDP, while the 1.8GHz D425 and D525 have 10-Watt TDPs.

Like the Capa800 before it, the Capa801 employs Intel's ICH8M I/O controller and can accept up to 2GB of RAM in a single DIMM slot, according to Axiomtek. And, again, the device has both a Mini PCI Express slot and (on its flip side) a CompactFlash Type II slot.

As depicted above, the Capa801 has some standard connectors on its coastline, including dual gigabit Ethernet ports, a VGA port, and a serial port. Access to four additional USB ports, a second serial port, and LVDS output is provided via headers, Axiomtek adds.

According to Axiomtek, the Capa801 also has two SATA ports and an audio header. Like its predecessor, the device is said to use 12VDC port, support operation in temperatures ranging from 32 to 140 deg. F, and to run either Linux or Windows.

Features and specifications listed by Axiomtek for the Capa801 include:
