3.5-inch SBC can take the heat

Mar 24, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Axiomtek announced a 3.5-inch single board computer equipped with a 1.1GHz Intel Atom Z510PT processor and an operating range of -40 to 185 deg. F. The SBC84826 can use up to 2GB DDR2 memory, and offers Mini PCI Express expansion, gigabit and fast Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, says the company.

The SBC84826 is best suited for unconstrained thermal environments in medical, industrial control, automation, and gaming applications, says Axiomtek. It follows in the footsteps of the SBC84823 single board computer (SBC) released in October 2009, which offered the same Intel Atom PT processors and industrial-grade temperature range. Differences include the addition of a 10/100 Ethernet port to join the earlier 10/100/1000 port.

The PT version of the Z510 comes in a larger 22 x 22mm package using 1.0mm ball pitch, enabling it to include integrated heat spreaders and offer better thermal protection. This enables the 5.75 x 4.1-inch SBC84826 to offer an industrial operating range from -40 to 85 deg. C (-40 to 185 deg. F). The Z510PT has a 2.2 Watt TDP, 1.1GHz clock speed, 400MHz FSB, and no hyperthreading.

The Atom Z510PT is combined here with the expected US15WPT companion chip, plus up to 2GB DDR2 memory. The SBC also offers a CompactFlash Type-II slot and a SATA port for storage, and a PCI Express Mini Card slot is available for expansion.

Equipped with VGA and LVDS ports, the board supports dual display capability, says Axiomtek. As noted, the company provides a fast Ethernet port in addition to the earlier gigabit version, with the latter offering features like wake-on-LAN and PXE boot.

Additional I/O includes four USB 2.0 ports, two of which appear to be external, and an external serial port, with three more serial connections available internally, all powered via +5V/12V power. A PS/2 port, eight DIO interfaces, and audio I/O are also said to be available.

Features and specifications listed for the SBC84826 include:

  • Processor — Intel Atom Z510PT with SCH US15WPT chipset with GMA500 graphics
  • Memory — up to 2GB DDR2 (400/533MHz) via 1 x 200-pin SODIMM
  • Expansion — 1 x PCIe Mini Card slot
  • Flash expansion — 1 x CompactFlash Type II

Stated Joseph Chou, product manager of Product & Marketing Division at Axiomtek, "The rugged SBC84826 offers an excellent balance between high performance and power-saving for space-limited and thermally constrained embedded applications."

Availability

Designed to run Linux, Windows XP Embedded, and Windows CE, the SBC84826 will be available around the end of April, says Axiomtek, which did not list pricing. More information may be found on the company's SBC84826 page.
