Analog Devices debuts single-chip “Internet Modem”

Back in the late 70's, the big story in embedded electronics was about programmed microprocessors replacing dedicated logic controllers. “Firmware” was beginning to replace “hard-wired logic” in all sorts of automated systems. The chips that fueled that process were first the 4004, 8008, and 8080 microprocessors, and later the 6502, 8051, and 68HC11 microcontrollers. (more…)

The DiskOnChip GPL-compliant solution — finally!

A fully GPL-compliant solution for installing and running a bootable DiskOnChip flash disk in a Linux-based system is now available directly from M-Systems. The solution is offered in binary form (without source), and provides two approaches to incorporating DiskOnChip into the Linux system:

QNX reports that there have now been over 200,000 downloads of the “free” version of QNX on the company's get.qnx.com website. “With over 45,000 pre-registered users and developers, we expected a healthy response,” said QNX President Gordon Bell. “But truth is, we've been blown away — not just by the sheer number of downloads, but by the rave reviews people are giving the platform itself.”

If you could travel back in time to the Embedded Systems Conference of September 1999, you would find that the “Embedded Linux Market” simply did not exist, one short year ago. Sure, a growing number of developers and a handful of companies were starting to embed Linux.
