Compact, rugged computer features wireless expansion

Nexcom announced a compact, fanless automation computer that tolerates shock, vibration, and temperatures ranging from 23 to 131 deg. F. The NISE 103 is equipped with a 1.8GHz Intel Atom D425 processor, up to 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, CompactFlash and SATA storage, plus Mini PCIe, gigabit Ethernet, serial, USB, and DIO connections, says the company.

The 7.28 x 5.2 x 2.13-inch (185 x 131 x 54mm) NISE 103 is designed for space-constrained automation and control applications, says Nexcom. These are said to include transportation control systems, gate control systems, SCADA and wireless RTU (Remote Terminal Unit), communications control, as well as kiosk and self-service systems.

Previous Atom-based computers in Nexcom's NISE line of fanless automation PCs include the NISE 2100 and NISE 2110, both of which incorporate Intel's dual-core Atom D525. The new NISE 103 takes it down a notch to settle on the similar, single-core D425, which is clocked to 1.8GHz and accompanied by an Intel ICH8M chipset.

The NISE 103 can be loaded with up to 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM, and offers a Compact Flash socket, a SATA DOM, and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) bay, says Nexcom. Dual gigabit Ethernet ports are supplied, as well as a front-facing RS232/422/485 port and three RS232 ports, one of which also faces front, says the company.

The NISE 103 offers four USB ports, two of which face front, and also provides digital I/O, VGA, and audio ports, says Nexcom. Wireless expansion is enabled via a Mini PCI Express slot, two antenna holes, and a SIM card holder, says the company.

Housed in an aluminum chassis, the NISE 103 is said to offer "superb" resistance to shock and vibration, and supports temperatures ranging from 23 to 131 deg. F (-5 to 55 deg. C). The NISE 103 supports Linux 2.4 and 2.6, as well as Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Embedded Standard 2009, Windows Embedded Standard 7, and Windows CE 6.0, says the company.

Features and specifications listed for the NISE 103 include:
