Kontron has introduced the second in its series of EPIC format single-board computers (SBCs) targeting embedded applications. The EPIC/PM supports Linux on 800 MHz to 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium M and Celeron M processors, according to the company.

Kontron notes that virtually all of the board's I/O interfaces are brought out to front panel connectors arranged similarly to desktop motherboard configurations. In addition, the company says it plans to maintain consistent locations for both internal and external I/O connectors on all of its EPIC SBCs, to support easy scalability without requiring enclosure redesign or adaptation.

The standard EPIC/PM is based on the 90 nm Pentium M 745, clocked at 1.8 GHz, which requires active cooling as shown at right. For lower cost or fanless applications, the SBC is also available with low-power Celeron processors at 800 MHz or 1 GHz.

Kontron lists the following key features and specifications for the EPIC/PM:

  • Processor options:
    • Pentium M 745 at 1.8 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache
    • ULV Celeron 373 at 1 GHz, 512 KB L2
    • Celeron at 800 MHz, no L2 cache
  • Chipset — 855GME + ICH4
  • Memory — up to 2 GB SODIMM DDR RAM
  • Display:
    • Intel Extreme Graphics 2 engine
    • 2x 32 MB UMA VRAM
    • DVO, VGA and LVDS outputs

    Storage:

    • EIDE UMA-100
    • CompactFlash Type I socket
    • Floppy interface
  • I/O ports:
    • 2 10/100 Ethernet
    • 6 x USB 2.0; the 4 “external” ports provide overcurrent protection
    • 4 x serial — 3 RS232; 1 RS232/422/485
    • audio connectors — line in/out, mic in
    • LPT
    • PS/2 keyboard and mouse
  • Expansion — PC/104-Plus module location; includes PCI and ISA connectors
  • Power supply — ATX connector or single 5V supply

Availability

Volume shipment of the EPIC/PM is expected in the second quarter, Kontron said. Pricing was not disclosed. In addition to Linux, the board also runs Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded
