Mini PC is designed for medical use
Aug 5, 2009 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 3 viewsAdvantech has announced a mini PC and matching display designed for medical use. The PIN-M106 PC and PDC-190 display offer dust- and water-resistant enclosures and can be disinfected with alcohol, the company says.
According to Advantech, the fanless PIN-M106 is suitable for use even in operating rooms, because its IPX1-rated enclosure resists drips and may readily be sanitized with cleaning agents. In addition, the device is said to have UL60601-1/EN60601-1 certifications, plus isolated COM and LAN ports that protect against electrical leakage.
Rather than using Intel's popular Atom processor, the PIN-M106 employs the chipmaker's Celeron M ULV, clocked at 1.06GHz and backed by the 945GME northbridge and ICH7M southbridge. The device's two SODIMM sockets accept up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, says Advantech.
For mass storage, the PIN-M106 accommodates a single 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive, and is also available with an optional flash module of unspecified capacity. Internally, the device also has Mini PCI and Mini PCI express expansion slots, according to the company.

Measuring 10.27 x 7.26 x 2.63 inches, the PIN-M106 has a broad complement of ports, as pictured above. Interfaces include three gigabit Ethernet ports, with RJ45 connectors, four USB ports, dual RS232 ports, a microphone input, and a line output. The PC also has both DVI-I and DVI-D video outputs, which are said to support dual displays with resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 pixels each.
Recommended for connection to the PIN-M106 is the separately available PDC-190 display, which can be mounted in either portrait or landscape configurations, as shown at right. Offering a 19-inch flat panel but no touchscreen functionality, the PDC-190 is said to be particularly suitable for medical use thanks to an overall IPX1 rating and IP65 certification for its front panel.
The PDC-190 offers resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, and a 600-nit brightness rating. A standard model includes DVI-D and VGA inputs plus a USB 2.0 hub, while an enhanced PDC-190S version adds S-Video, composite, and component video connectors, according to Advantech.

Advantech says the PIN-M106 and PDC-190 are available now, but made no mention of pricing or operating system support. With its familiar processor and chipset, however, the PC should readily support Linux.
