Octagon Systems announced a rugged, compact (5 x 7.5 in.) single-board computer (SBC) that combines dual-Ethernet, quad-serial, PCMCIA, and industrial I/O and can optionally be supplied with a version of embedded Linux. The PCS-620 is designed for transportation, automation, medical, and other applications requiring high reliability or resistance to harsh environments, the company said.

The PCS-620 is based on a low-power, 300MHz, “Pentium class processor” that is said to be capable of operating at high temperature with little or no ventilation. Interfaces include dual 10/100 Base-T Ethernet ports, four serial ports, a CardBus (PCMCIA) slot, dual USB ports, dual AC97 compatible audio, CRT and flat panel video (up to 1280×1024 pixel resolution), PC-style parallel, floppy, and EIDE ports, and an ambient temperature sensor. Onboard memory is up to 512MB of SDRAM. Additionally, the card supports up to 2GB of Flash via a CompactFlash socket. The SBC can be further be expanded using the PC/104-Plus mezzanine module location. Other useful features include built-in self diagnostics, back-drive protection on the serial and parallel ports, and over-voltage and reverse voltage protection.

The SBC is priced at $795 in quantities of 100 or more. QNX and Windows CE .NET support are also available, Octagon said.
