Gaming computer gambles on AMD G-Series chips

Jul 20, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 19 views

Aewin announced a gaming computer equipped with a choice of AMD G-Series processors: either the dual-core 1.6GHz T56N or the single-core 1.2GHz T44R. The SGA-2200 is available with one or two gigabit Ethernet ports, six or 10 COM ports, four USB ports, specialized security features, and gaming-specific digital I/O aplenty.

The SGA-2200 is well suited for slot machines, amusement with prize (AWP) games, and video lottery terminals (VLT), says Aewin. To support these applications, the company has fitted this Gaming Laboratories Intl.-compliant computer with physical, data, and software security features. For example, the SGA-2200 can write at least 100KB of data into NVRAM during an unpredicted AC power failure, "and make sure the data remains secured," says the company.

Customers can choose between two different models that differ slightly in I/O depending on the processor, each running either Linux or Windows XP. The available dual-core 1.6GHz T56N and single-core 1.2GHz T44R AMD G-Series processors include DirectX 11-capable GPUs (graphics processing units) on-die.

The SGA-2200 can achieve up to a 2,500 score while running 3DMark 2006 at 1024 x 768 resolution with 32-bit mode, claims Aewin. The device can decode H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1,DivX, Xvid, MPEG2, and Blu-ray video formats, the company adds.

The 11.0 x 6.88 x 3.78-inch SGA-2200 supports up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and offers a solid state drive (SSD) with 2GB NAND flash, or 8GB optional, says Aewin. Battery backup is supported via NVRAM, with 2MB available on the T56N-equipped model and 512MB on the T44R-based SKU.

Dual CFast-compliant CompactFlash slots are available for flash expansion, and the system offers a pair of internal SATA interfaces, says the company. A PCI Express (PCIe) x16 slot is said to be available for peripheral expansion.

SGA-2200, front ports

Depending on the model, the system offers two (T56N) or one (T44R) front-facing gigabit Ethernet ports, and 10 or six COM ports, respectively. Aewin doesn't detail which of the COM ports are stripped from the T44R model. The ports include dual front-facing RS232 connections, as well as two more standard serial ports on the back, where you'll also find an RS485 port and three "simple" RS232 ports.

SGA-2200, rear ports

Also facing front are four USB 2.0 ports, some audio ports, and both DVI and DVI-D ports, says Aewin. The remaining rear ports are focused on gaming industry and security I/O, including 16 ports each of ESD- and photocoupler-protected digital I/O inputs, two ccTalk connections, and intrusion detection I/O.
